Paleo Diet For Beginners 2016

Paleo Diet For Beginners 2016

Hello everyone and welcome to this very special edition of Paleo diet for beginners 2016

I just wanted to get in touch with you to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

I also wanted to share with you my experiences of 2015 and my plans for 2016. I would also love to hear from you regarding your plans for the new year and how this year has been.

My year at a glance 2015

I have to say that 2015 has been my best year so far. I started 2015 at my ideal weight and wanted to now build muscle and definition.

The start of 2015 signalled the end of my battle with weight loss and I owe my successes to the Paleo diet which I began around 18 months ago to this day.

My baby daughter Cara was born in 2015 to make our clan a team of 4 now and she is doing extremely well.

Paleo diet for beginners was born in 2015 as well and I built this to share my experiences of the Paleo diet and hopefully this will help some beginners take that leap of faith and jump straight into the Paleo diet.

I made Paleo diet for beginners as a resource that I wish I had when I was first starting out on the Paleo diet but didn’t have all the information and guidelines. The result was that I wasted about 6 months of my life getting on and off the Paleo lifestyle as I didn’t know what not to do.

If I can help one person by saving time and pointing them in the right direction so that they have all the knowledge and resources to embark on the Paleo diet, then Paleo diet for beginners is a success in my eyes.

Paleo Diet For Beginners 2016

My son Noah will be going off to school in 2016 (how time flies :)) and he is a big boy now.

I plan to launch an online store dedicated to health and fitness products which would be perfect to complement Paleo diet for beginners and will feature all the latest up and coming health and fitness related gizmos and gadgets.

www.leanrepublic.co.uk

I also plan to launch a website dedicated to gaining weight the right way. There are some of us (myself included) that after losing the weight would like to add some muscle and definition but not fat. This website will share information on this.

www.workouthacks.org

I am really excited to bring to you my new articles and recipes to Paleo diet for beginners 2016!

Changes in the Paleo movement.

In 2015 what I noticed was that even the most hardcore of Paleo dieters started to get a little forgiving.

Times have changed (for the better in my opinion) it’s good to have a cheat option available for you once a week when you have hit your weight and fitness target.

I have pizza sometimes on a Saturday so I can keep cravings at bay and not relapse one day.

I started 2015 as a hardcore Paleo fanatic and I am going into 2016 with an optional cheat day so I keep my sanity. I have achieved my weight and fitness goals, now I can relax.

Do whatever works for you.

What to expect in 2016

Paleo diet for beginners 2016 will see a continuation of the website’s content schedule.

I will share a free weekly recipe as always and a weekly article on the Paleo movement so we can all comment, discuss and learn from one another.

I Appreciate you!

Thank you for reading,

I wish you a very merry christmas and a happy new year!

I will see you in 2016

Paleo Diet against Autoimmune Diseases

Hello and thank you for reading Paleo diet For Beginners. An Autoimmune Disease is when your body’s own immune system starts attacking yourself! This is a crippling condition that becomes a lifelong ailment with no cure.

I would like to share with you a truly inspirational story of a woman called Danielle Walker who was dealt a bad hand and used the Paleo diet to get her life back from a crippling autoimmune condition.

Paleo Diet Against Autoimmune Diseases

Danielle was admitted to hospital in 2007 unbeatable abdominal pain, bleeding and digestive problems. To make things worse, it was just 2 months after she finished college and got married! She had no previous illnesses and doctors discharged her prescribing some medication without actually knowing what the problem was.

Fast forward two weeks and she was still in agonising pain and it seemed like the medication actually made things worse.

Following further hospital visits, she was diagnosed as having a disease similar to Crohs. She recalls feeling hopeless and alone as Crohns is an irreversible crippling disease that you have to live with for the rest of your life.

Danielle had to now live life accepting that she had Crohs and will never be a mum again. Fast forward a further 6 months and Danielle was rushed to a hospital in Uganda whilst on a humanitarian trip with her husband. She had become anaemic and lost 20 pounds in a mere 10 days! She felt being close to death.

She was sent back to the US as a matter of urgency to get a blood transfusion. These episodes carried on for months and some spells in hospital lasted 4 months! During these spells she was not allowed to see her son!

This was her breaking point. She had accepted that the doctors didn’t know what they were doing and she had enough of these treatments that she started to look at alternative remedies.

No doctor in the world would prescribe changing diet as a treatment so Danielle took matters into her own hands and with the help of a nutritionist, started eliminating food groups known to cause and trigger autoimmune responses.

She came across the Paleo diet. She also eliminated eggs and mushrooms from her Paleo diet for further precautions. She supplemented her diet with supplements similar to these

Danielle saw changes in literally 48 hours! She kept leading a Paleo Lifestyle.

She hasn’t been hospitalised since 2011!

She has dedicated a blog called Against All Grain and shares tasty treats to help people stay on the Paleo diet as sometimes it does get hard to stick to a restricted diet but for people like Danielle, this diet has completely transformed her life for the better!

Imagine how different life for Danielle would have been had she not stumbled on the Paleo diet? She could not have been the mum and wife that she wanted to be.

I Appreciate you!

Thank you for reading, check back next week as I am super excited to share with you my research on how diet affects ADHD and if the Paleo diet could help!

Paleo Superfoods The Complete Essentials

Hello everyone and welcome to Paleo diet for beginners. It’s a cold November morning and after watching Wednesday’s The Apprentice, I thought Paleo superfoods would be a great topic to talk about.

In this article I will share with you some of the Paleo superfoods (approved) that I try and incorporate into my diet. I will share with you the benefits of each of these superfoods and sometimes how to incorporate them into your diet. Its often as simple as sprinkling some on your favourite meals just for that extra boost.

Paleo Superfoods

Superfoods have been around for centuries and humans have been using them for their awesome nutritional and healing properties.

Many cultures have been using these by including them in daily diets. Some of them are antioxidants, some detox and others give you energy.

In recent years, superfoods have become trendy again so hopefully this article will slap you make sense of it all and see how these fits into a Paleo lifestyle.

Acai

This used to be a fad diet (Acai berry diet anyone?) but leaving that aside, this small purple berry from Brazil comes packed with antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Research points to its benefits to the immune system, anti ageing properties and beautiful skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Real apple cider vinegar (ie the unfermented, unpasteurised stuff) has high probiotic properties (gut bacteria) that help with digestive problems. Use instead of vinegar.

Aloe Vera

Not just for external use. This amazing cactus is high in vitamin B12, is anti inflammatory and anti bacterial naturally. Benefits of this includes its internal healing properties. You can find Aloe Vera drinks in store

Blue Green Algae

These algae have been proven to contain every required vitamin, mineral and amino acid. You have to eat tonnes of it but every little helps.

Cacao

This is not chocolate. This is the raw form that is used to make chocolate (before all the sugar and chemicals). This is bitter and far from the chocolate you love but it’s extremely high in antioxidants and minerals. This is my evening drink

Camu Camu

Native to the jungles of Peru. This berry packs a massive amount of vitamin C making it awesome for your immune system.

Cayenne pepper

Glamourised by Beyoncé. With good reason. This pepper speeds up your metabolism and comes with vitamins. Recent research has linked cayenne pepper to prevention of prostate cancer.

Chia Seeds

Native of Mexico. These seeds give you energy. They are also high in omega 3’s. Have loads of proteins and minerals. You can simply sprinkle everything you eat with chia seeds. I do.

Chlorella

Not to be confused with other algae. This alga has a ridiculous amount of magnesium and chlorophyll. It detoxifies, helps with the immune system, Aids blood circulation, mental clarity and focus.

Cinnamon

This is great for colds, indigestion and to regulate blood sugar levels. I sprinkle this on my breakfast all the time

Ginseng

Ancient Chinese superfood. Reduce stress and elevated energy levels. I consume a lot of this in herbal teas.

Goji berries

These little superfoods from Tibet pack more vitamin c than oranges and surprisingly more iron than spinach! (Eat that Popeye). These are anti inflammatory and great for energy levels. I snack on these in the evening after a workout.

Green tea

This is a great all rounder. Amazing for weight loss and improving thyroid function. Replace your coffee for this amazing beverage.

Hemp seeds

Did you know that these contain more omega 3 than any other food in the world? This is also a great protein source and comes packed with essential minerals and vitamin E. Sprinkle these on your foods.

Noni

Member of the coffee family. This berry is used to treat depression and elevates moods

Nutritional yeast

I love this! Loaded with B vitamins and protein.

Pomegranate

My favourite snack fruit. Has very high levels of potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants. Regulates blood cholesterol and helps fight cancer.

Rooibos tea

This native tea from South Africa is loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols. It detoxes the liver and helps digestion.

Turmeric

This yellow spice is a staple in Indian and Chinese cuisine. Its anti inflammatory. Studies have showed that this can help in battling cancer, Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

That’s it, a complete Paleo superfoods guide for your information. I hope this articles helps you make a few decisions as to why incorporating these into your diets can give you a lot of health benefits.

Paleo Diet for beginners, carbs and why I have no energy?

Hey everyone and welcome to Paleo diet for beginners. In todays article, I would like to talk about and highlight why you may experience sudden drops in energy levels and the role that your relationship with carbs play in this. This is especially true when first embarking on your paleo diet for beginners journey.

The inspiration for this article comes from a very good friend of mine who I recommended get on the Paleo diet and to be honest, she absolutely smashed it.

She lost over a 100 pounds in a few months. She followed a strict Paleo diet (but shunned all carbs and fats) and ran about 20 miles a week!

The problems she complained about were that she felt like she had no energy and she didn’t have any muscle definition.

Paleo Diet for beginners, carbs and why I have no energy?

The media these days have labelled carbs as evil and bad for weight loss but this is a great example why you should be incorporating some carbs in your diet to keep up your energy levels and also prevent you from losing muscle mass that your body worked so hard to build.

Don’t get me wrong, carbs in excess will definitely lead to weight gain. If your aim was just weight loss without exercise, I wouldn’t bother too much about carbs, you could do without but if you are looking to incorporate a training programme (like my friend) here’s why you should incorporate some carbs in your diet.

I am going to highlight some studies conducted in this respect (references below) that all prove that consistent exercise which is at least 30 minutes long, 3 times a week at a Vo2 max level above 65% increases GLUT 4 expression in muscles.

Untitled design (2)

So what does this GLUT 4 transporter do? It transports the required glucose from your body’s glycogen reserves (energy stores) to your muscles to fuel your exercise.

Scientists have concluded that the body stores about 2000 calories of glucose as glycogen. If you don’t move much, you will burn about 600 calories. Imagine, you exercised and then also cut out carbs from your diet? You will run out of energy in about a week max (like my friend)

Then what happens is that your workouts get less high intensity as you will start to burn fat for energy (ketogenic). This is a slower process and is not good for high intensity training.

After reading this, you are probably thinking, that’s great news. Burn fat. But the problem here is that our body goes into starvation mode (which is a survival mechanism) that down regulates metabolic processes which is not good especially if you want to build muscle.

Another effect of going into starvation mode is the reduction of levels of Leptin in your system.

paleo diet for beginners and low energy

What is Leptin?

This is the hormone that is down regulated when you are hungry. This when problems happen, this is when you start craving things. I was fine for the first week or so but then you cave and binge eat.

Cravings are kind of a double edged sword, eat too much and you get cravings. Eat too little and you still get cravings.

So what works?

Well what worked for me was by limiting my carbohydrate intake to 150 – 200 g a day. I stuck to my best friend the sweet potato.

Research recommends consuming this after training as the increased GLUT 4 receptors will ensure that the glucose derived will go straight to the muscles.

To conclude, your body transformation is an ever changing process. What worked for me 2 months ago won’t work today. I absolutely swear by the Paleo diet (as you can probably tell) and using this lifestyle, I constantly tweak my macronutrients based on what goals I want to achieve.

I hope this article will help you like it helped my friend. Remember, this problem is a good problem to have because it means that you have actually taken the first steps and some of you may have even attained ketosis. Now it’s time to address some of the after effects.

Thank you for reading, in next weeks article, I am excited to talk to you about the Paleo diet and superfoods. This is quiet a controversial topic in the Paleo circles so I think its going to be a good one.

Paleo Diet To Help Arthritis

Paleo Diet for beginners investigates the effects of Paleo diet to help arthritis. I have selected two studies for the purposes of this article that prove that diet can actually help arthritis and what are good foods for arthritis. The links to these studies are in the references section below.

This article follows a series of articles that focus on using the Paleo diet to combat ailments. So far I have covered using the paleo diet to clear acne and paleo diet and type 2 diabetes reversal. Follow the links to have a look at them if you have the time.

Anyways, thats enough of me rambling on, lets get to today’s topic

Paleo Diet To Help Arthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA as its called

Here’s another example how a simple shift in consuming a healthy diet and leading a healthy lifestyle could drastically minimise your chances of developing autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

It’s sad to know that often the most times someone was to change their diet and lifestyle is only when they hit rock bottom such as being labelled morbidly obese or getting the bad news that they have cancer or diabetes.

In this article, I am investigating the scientific findings that provide evidence that a Paleo lifestyle could actually minimise the development of rheumatoid arthritis and Paleo Diet To Help Arthritis

So what is rheumatoid arthritis?

Paleo Diet To Help Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that that causes your body’s own immune system to attack your joints. This causes inflammation which in turn makes the tissues around the joint swell and cause pain and discomfort.

A study by Terry Wahls and Eve Adamson (called the Wahls protocol) proved that avoiding certain foods and living a Paleo lifestyle made managing an inflammatory condition possible.

A further study by live strong.com compared the effects of a standard western diet (high in fat, processed junk and sugar) and the effects of a Paleo diet. The study concluded that subjects on the Paleo diet had significantly lower chances of developing inflammation. Researchers put the figure at a reduction of 33%

Why does the Paleo diet reduce risk of rheumatoid arthritis?

 Paleo Diet To Help Arthritis

The Paleo diet comprises of a diet rich in alkaline and anti-inflammatory foods so it’s only natural for a diet such as this to ensure that the body is armed with all the defenses it needs to be equipped for a long and healthy life.

Paleo Diet Vs Acne – Study Proves Paleo Diet Clears Acne

For years, people believed that Acne was all in the genetics. This is partly true but diet is now a major contributor as well. You will discover why in this article.

Paleo diet for beginners investigates the relationship between Paleo diet Vs Acne from a scientific point of view using a study (link is below in references section). This is a really long and through paper that is confusing so I have taken all the information and condensed it in this article.

Hopefully, this makes it easier to understand.

Paleo Diet Vs Acne

Acne is an epidemic that is strongly related to diet. Several studies have proved that the main food classes that promote acne are high glycemic load carbohydrates, milk and dairy products and saturated fats.

paleo vs acne

Insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is heavily implicated in the formation and development of acne. IGF-1 and insulin are balanced by the transcription factor fork head box 01 (Fox01) and vice versa.

Acne is a result of increased sebum production, insulin and growth factor IGF-1.

High levels of IGF-1 correlates with increased growth of sebaceous glands and associated increase in facial sebum excretion leading to acne.

So what is IGF-1

This plays a pivotal role in sebaceous lipid production. This hormone is responsible for signalling 4 other elements and that is an AR transcription factor (like a signal for lipid production), PPARy receptor (one that binds to the AR factor, a receptor in the liver (where all the magic happens) and a sterol binding protein (to transport lipids synthesis from liver to required locations.

This IGF-1 system is negatively regulated by levels of, Fox01 (This is the balance mechanism)

Fox01 reduces the amount of IGF-1 in the system to reduce lipid synthesis and the pathways that cause acne symptoms.

The amount of Fox01 is reduced by higher levels of the insulin in the system hence why scientists in this study have concluded that low carb diets or diets with low glycemic indexes lead to lower insulin levels and by default lower symptoms of acne as levels of IGF will be low and Fox01 will be higher.

paleo vs acne

In order to test this idea scientists observed a group of subjects on a “normal” western diet and another group of subjects on a Paleo diet for 4 weeks.

The subjects on the western diet exhibited higher levels of IGF-1, facial sebum and insulin leading to formation of acne on their skin.

The subjects on the Paleo diet had higher levels of Fox01, lesser sebum excretion and lower levels of insulin revealing much lower levels of acne on their skin.

Paleo & Diabetes Type 2 Reversal Studies

Paleo Diabetes Type 2 Reversal Studies – Here’s 3 Of Them

I have been fascinated by the Paleo diet for about 4 years and been leading a Paleo lifestyle for nearly two years now. Coming from a science background myself (biochemist), I have always looked to scientific studies that prove something before I actually believe it because, numbers don’t lie.

As you have probably read, I have collected over 3000 papers on studies related to the Paleo diet and would like to share with you today 3 really important studies that I came across that really got me thinking that this Paleo diet could actually help. The studies were linked to

Paleo Diabetes Type 2 Reversal Studies

paleo diabetes

Here’s 3 recent studies

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=%22Diabetologia%22%5BJour%5D+AND+lindeberg%5Bauthor%5D&cmd=detailssearch

In this study, 29 patients that had heart disease and type 2 diabetes were asked to follow a strict Paleo diet for 12 weeks.

The main changes that the scientists observed were big changes in the subjects weight, waist circumference, glucose levels in the blood and plasma insulin levels.

The bottom line was that the patients on the Paleo diet experienced a 26% decrease in blood sugar levels. These patients also reduced their waist circumference by an average of 5.6 cm!

This research proves that a Paleo diet improves one’s glucose tolerance and help with type 2 diabetes.

Second

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19604407

Now in this study carried out by the department of clinical science, Lund university compared the effects of patients on a Paleo diet and patients on a diabetes diet.

In this study, 13 patients who had diabetes for an average of 9 years each were asked to go on a Paleo diet for 3 months and then a diabetes diet (designed for people with diabetes)

The results are pretty eye opening. They concluded that a Paleo diet was better for glycemic control for the subjects and helped them improve their cardiovascular risk factors.

Scientists at the Lund university actually claim that the Paleo diet is better than a prescribed diabetes diet for patients who have type 2 diabetes.

Third

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25304296

In this third study carried out in 2014 by the Louis Bolk Institute in Netherlands, researchers aimed to take out weight loss from equation (as with the studies above) so that the effect of the diet alone can be monitored (rather than the effect of weight loss as well).

How they did this was by taking 34 subjects with metabolic syndrome (either type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular diseases) and putting them on a Paleo diet for two weeks. Only 32 completed the study. During the course of the study, measures were taken to keep body weight constant in all subjects so the effects of diet can be monitored without the effects of weight loss.

The results they got was the Paleo diet reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Although they tried to keep weight constant, the Paleo diet caused subjects to lose weight.

In conclusion, the researchers were confident that being on the Paleo diet for two weeks caused the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with forms of metabolic syndrome.

Paleo Diabetes Type 2 Reversal Studies

Is this conclusive enough for you?

Science and numbers don’t lie. Maybe it’s as a result of weight loss but the Paleo diet has proven to be beneficial for those with heart conditions, diabetes and forms of metabolic syndrome.

Here’s an infographic of Diabetes around the world!

paleo diabetes type 2 reversal

So what aren’t more people on the Paleo diet?

Some say it costs too much! Can you really put a price on your health?

Heres a Video Interview Carried Out By The Paleo Doc Herself

I like to think of Paleo as a lifestyle not a diet. For me it’s a way of life and I love it. I wake up feeling amazing and I get through my day feeling amazing. I also sleep really well.

Don’t make the same mistakes I made when I first started, the Paleo lifestyle is easy if you know how.

High protein diets and paleo diets are safe

Are High Protein Diets still safe after findings on red meat?

Ok so why am I (a devoted follower of the Paleo diet) writing this article? Well, it’s in response to the release by the world health organisation that there could be a possible link between bowel cancer and the overconsumption of processed meats and red meat. The problem with this report is that is does not state any amounts or thresholds that they recommend and simply just dates that too much of these proteins may cause bowel cancer. Seems like the people at the United Nations are just releasing this to stem the popularity of the Paleo diet and other high protein diets that are re emerging such as the Mediterranean diet.

Would love to hear what you think of these reports.

Anyway, back to the article, does anyone remember the Atkins diet?

This became a phenomenon back in the 90’s and started the trend of low carb diets. This became a massive hit back then and did so well that Dr. Atkins made well over 600 million dollars with his all you can eat meat diet which saw his followers start the day with a massive plate of bacon, eggs and sausages.

Problem with the Atkins diet was that it was so heavy on proteins, it lacked any carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fibre which is essential for maintaining a healthy body and systems. This eventually caused the diet to fizzle out and paved the way for the newcomer on the scene.

High protein diets and paleo diets are safe

The Paleo diet.

Now this diet has held its own for a while now and for good reason. It is not just a diet, it’s a lifestyle. It’s high protein and low carb like the Atkins but also plays a very special role in consumption of vegetables for vitamins, minerals and fibre. Unlike the Atkins, the Paleo diet also contains complex carbohydrates from sources such as sweet potato which gives followers of this lifestyle all the nutrients they need to lead a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable and enjoyable.

So is a lot of meat actually bad for you in high protein diets?

The answer to this is yes! A lot of protein is bad for you BUT all protein is not created equal. For example, the world health organisation states that your recommended allowance of cooked red meat should be 500g a week. This is for medium cooked meat. Now following you consume your red meat rare, this allowance can be increased to 650g a week. To further add to this, if you source your red meat from organic grass fed sources AND consume it rare, you can up your allowance to 800g per week.

Did that make sense? So if you focus on quality organic sources that are grass fed and cook for a lesser amount of time (retains more moisture) you should be able to consume a lot more meat without increasing your risk of developing bowel cancer.

Now processed meat on the other hand is bad for you and contains nitrates and other chemicals that increase your risk of cancer. Studies have shown that consuming 50g of processed meats such as ham, bacon slices, salami etc a day can increase your risk of bowel cancer by 18%!

So if you are a good Paleo, you will be avoiding processed meats (shame on you if you haven’t already) so I don’t see the problem here. If you are on the Atkins or Dukan, you have a problem because processed turkey slices seem to be a popular theme in these.

The Pegan Diet – A Beginners Guide To The Best Of Paleo + Vegan Diets

The Pegan Diet is on fire! This is probably one of the hottest lifestyle and diet trends of the year so far and to me from a scientific point of view, it makes sense! In this post I take a look at –

  1. What is the Pegan Diet?
  2. How this combines the best of Paleo Diets and Vegan Diets?
  3. The GRAY areas of the Pegan Diet?
  4. What does someone on the Pegan Diet eat?

Pegan Diet Guide - What Is The Pegan Diet-

The Pegan Diet or Paleo vegan diet coined by Dr. Hyman has been one of the hottest topics on the Internet.

I have been a grateful follower of the Paleo diet since January 2014 and I have to say, it’s changed my life. I just feel amazing, I look amazing and to use a phrase from Tony Robbins, I awakened the giant within. The scientist in me (degree in biochemistry) always pushes me to keep up with current trends and urging edge research and I have to say I am not afraid to use myself as a Guinea pig.

One exciting development in the world of diet and fitness is the Paleo vegan diet or the pegan diet which has been coined by Dr. Hyman and I must say, I am convinced to give this a try as it is interesting and does make sense from a scientific point of view.

I know this is going to really piss a lot of people off but let’s look at it from an objective point of view. Athletes are the prime example of human beings in top physical condition. Look at Lebron James, he attributes his success to being a Paleo. Makes sense, he cuts out all processed foods and gluten and he is one of the finest athletes in the world. On the flip side, take a look at Rich Roll, this beast of a man completed 5 ironman marathons in the space of a mere 7 days! And this guy is vegan!

Now here lies the problem. What’s the best diet or lifestyle to follow? Do you give up grains and beans (like Lebron James) and eat meat and fat with no limits or do you give up all animal derived foods in favour of beans and grains like Rich?

Dr. Hyman has come up with a genius proposition here and I recommend everyone watch this space as this Could get explosive. Dr. Hyman has taken the best bits of the Paleo diet and the vegan diet and combined them to coin the phrase, pegan diet.

Ok, so before I get ahead of myself, let’s take a look at the commonalities between the Paleo diet and the vegan diet.

  • Carries a low glycemic load as these diets cut out refined carbohydrates ie stuff that’s easy to digest.
  • Features a lot of fruits and veggies. This is great for high fibre, nutrients to stave off disease and general health as well being.
  • Not contaminated by additives, pesticides, hormones and other crap as long as you stick to organic stuff.
  • No chemicals and flavourings and other drugs.
  • High in good fats which has been scientifically proven to reduce heart disease.
  • High in protein for muscle building and keep cravings at bay as you stay fuller for longer.

Ok so no we need to talk about the shady bits and that is the not so clear cut areas.

  • Dairy – now this is avoided by both the Paleo and the vegan camps and for good reason as well. Consumption of dairy has been linked with diabetes, obesity and a lot of ailments so it really is not that good for you but only in small amounts.
  • Grains – this is a definite no no for us Paleos but a staple for vegans.
  • Beans – again this is a definite no for Paleos but vegans depend on this for fibre and most importantly protein which is hard to come by in a vegan diet.
  • Meat – high quality organic meat is a staple in the Paleo diet and not allowed on a vegan diet.

With all this in mind, what does one do? Does one go Paleo? Does one go vegan? Or does one go pegan?

So what does a Pegan dieter eat?

pegan diet - what does a pegan dieter eat?

  • Pegan dieters will focus more on nuts and seeds to get their protein.
  • Avocados for their fats.
  • 75% of their diet will consist of vegetables.
  • Avoid dairy
  • Avoid gluten
  • Eat mostly lentils and low starchy beans.
  • Eat animals or animal products only as a side dish (as opposed to being a main on the Paleo)

I personally am still a fan of my beloved Paleo diet but I will keep a close eye on this pegan diet until more research and experiments have been carried out into the long term effects of subjects on this diet.

I love Dr. Hymans idea and concept and scientifically it makes sense. It would be great to get some experimental data behind this and who knows, the pegan diet may be the next big thing in the world of dieting and lifestyles.
